The Mega Movement for Good Governance and Democracy has staged a major protest in Abuja, demanding that the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, be immediately arraigned before a competent court of law to face trial over alleged atrocities committed under his leadership.
The protesters, who marched through parts of the Federal Capital Territory, carried placards with inscriptions such as “No One Is Above the Law,” “Justice for Victims of IPOB Killings,” and “Trial Not Politics.” They insisted that justice must take its full course, stressing that no political solution should be considered in a matter involving the loss of lives and destruction of property.
Speaking to journalists during the protest, the Convener of the group, Muhammad Muhammad, told DailyReporters24 that the movement was formed to promote accountability, justice, and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria.
He accused Nnamdi Kanu and his followers of orchestrating violence that has led to the death of over 1,200 innocent Nigerians, including security operatives, civilians, and other law-abiding citizens in the South-East region.
“With all the atrocities Nnamdi Kanu has committed, which resulted in the loss of more than 1,200 lives, including security personnel murdered in cold blood, it will be a great injustice to let him go unpunished. We are calling on the Federal Government and the judiciary to ensure that Kanu is tried and made to face the full wrath of the law,” Muhammad said.
The convener expressed disappointment over the decision of some political figures calling for a “political solution” to Kanu’s case, describing it as a dangerous precedent that could encourage impunity and lawlessness.
“We are totally against any form of political settlement or negotiation in this matter. What we want is a fair and transparent trial according to the Nigerian Constitution. Anyone who has committed such grave offenses against the state and the people must be held accountable, no matter his tribe, religion, or region,” he added.
Muhammad further revealed that during the course of the protest, security operatives fired tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.
However, he noted that such intimidation would not deter them from continuing their campaign until justice is served.
“We have been tear-gassed by the police, but that will not stop us. If it will take more than tear gas for us to achieve this mission, we are prepared to endure it. This is not about politics or ethnicity; it is about justice, unity, and the protection of Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.
The protesters also called on the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s judicial system to ensure that those found guilty of acts of terrorism, banditry, or secessionist violence are made to face appropriate punishment.
They maintained that selective justice or political interference in such cases could jeopardize national peace and security.
“Not only Nnamdi Kanu, but anyone found wanting in this kind of crime should be prosecuted in accordance with the law, irrespective of their background. That is the only way Nigerians can regain confidence in the justice system,” the group declared.
The Mega Movement for Good Governance and Democracy, according to Muhammad, will continue to mobilize citizens across the country to demand accountability and uphold the principles of democracy, justice, and national unity.
