Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the airlifting of the state’s contingent to Asaba, Delta State, for the forthcoming National Youth Games, as part of efforts to safeguard the lives of athletes and officials representing the state.
The Acting Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Ibrahim Fagge, made the disclosure in Kano on Monday after a strategic meeting with the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Alhaji Mustapha Kwankwaso.
Fagge explained that the governor’s directive was a demonstration of his commitment to prioritising the welfare and safety of Kano’s athletes at all national competitions.
He recalled with deep sadness the tragic incident in which 22 young athletes from the state lost their lives in a road crash while returning from Ogun State after participating in the Gateway Games some years ago.
According to him, Governor Yusuf is “a humble and people-oriented leader who has consistently shown concern for the wellbeing of his people and is ever ready to deploy all available resources to protect their lives and property.”
While addressing the contingent, Fagge urged the athletes to remain disciplined, focused, and determined to win laurels that would make Kano proud.
He further reminded them that they carry the image of both the state government and the people of Kano, and must therefore conduct themselves as worthy ambassadors throughout the duration of the tournament.
The acting chairman also revealed that, in addition to air transportation, two fully equipped coaster buses with drivers had already been mobilised to Asaba to provide internal movement and logistics support for the team during the 10-day sporting event.
He concluded by calling on residents of the state to support the athletes with prayers for a safe journey, excellent performances, and a successful outing at the National Youth Games.
